Hazleton Art League Bus Trip:

Exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

Saturday, June 24, 2023; 8:30am - 5:00pm

The Hazleton Art League embarked on a bus trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art on the morning of Saturday, June 24, 2023. The focus of this trip was to view Hazleton native and internationally acclaimed American Portrait Photographer, Judith Joy Ross’s retrospective exhibition of compelling portrait photography spanning from the 1970s through the 2010s. Work from Ross’s exhibition included photography from her personal archive with a special focus on captured portraits taken in eastern Pennsylvania as well as works selected by the artist that were taken by French photographer, Eugène Atget (1857-1927). Ross’s reverence for Atget’s work is seen in their similar use of large-format cameras and straightforward contact prints to record their subjects. Ross’s work is known for the way she captures the complex narratives of her subjects to convey emotionally penetrative themes of the human experience.
